The seas are changing as Nat Geo has axed one of its longest-running series.
The Disney-owned cable network has canceled Wicked Tuna after its thirteenth season. The show, which comes from Lionsgate’s Pilgrim Media Group, has been airing on the network since 2012.
It follows a group of fisherman from Gloucester, Masschusetts as they rod and reel fish bluefin tuna.
The show, which also had a spinoff set in North Carolina, was a perfect example of cable fare, a long-running reality series that followed people with jobs. As the last few weeks have shown, original content on cable is being reduced dramatically.
The move comes after Nat Geo was hit hard by recent layoffs across Disney Entertainment Television with around 13% of its staff cut.
Nat Geo said that the series “celebrated one of America’s oldest industries” and “made internationally recognizable stars out of the intrepid commercial fishermen who brave the unrelenting North Atlantic waters to catch the elusive bluefin tuna” in a post on social media.
Variety was first with the news.
