Production has officially begun today on the Peaky Blinders movie in the UK. Check out a first-look photo of star Cillian Murphy as a graying Tommy Shelby above, and scroll down for more. Starring with Murphy are Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan and Tim Roth as MyRumors has previously exclusively revealed. The feature adaptation of the BAFTA-winning series was greenlighted by Netflix in June.
Oscar-winner Murphy is returning to the iconic role of Tommy Shelby, leader of the eponymous Birmingham gangster family. Details on other roles are being played close to the vest. The six-season BBC drama series came to a close in April 2022, but that was not the end of Tommy’s story. Plot details of the film are under wraps besides the detail that the story is set during World War II, which the show’s creator Steven Knight shared with MyRumors at the end of the series; he elaborates below.
The saga’s continuation is written by Knight, and directed by Peaky alum Tom Harper. Knight produces alongside Patrick Holland, Murphy and Guy Heeley. Exec producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Caryn Mandabach and Andrew Warren. The movie will be made in association with BBC Film.
Says Knight, “I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”
Adds Harper, “There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew. We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.”
