Martin Compston On ‘Line of Duty’ Return Only ‘For Right Reasons’

Line of Duty star Martin Compston has broken his silence on the return of the hit police drama, saying it will be only “for the right reasons.”

The BBC show, penned by Jed Mercurio and starring Vicky McClure, Adrian Dunbar alongside Compston, ran through six seasons from 2012 to 2021 and became one of the BBC’s biggest ever shows, with 13million tuning in for the finale – and the reveal of master villain “H” – four years ago.

Fans were loud in their disappointment of the concluding storyline, with clamours for a further season to tie up loose ends, and UK press has previously indicated a seventh season is secretly in the works.

Now Compston, who also stars in Amazon Prime’s The Rig, has told The Sun newspaper:

“We’re always talking about possibilities and schedules and whatnot. Everybody’s got stuff going on at the minute, so I think anything, unfortunately, would be a way off.

And he added: “It’s amazing. It’s the best feeling as an actor when you feel like the whole country’s in the palm of your hand with what’s coming next, and there’s only a couple of you in that secret of who’s surviving and what’s going on.

“But because we’re all so close and we all want the best for the show, we wouldn’t do it again just for the sake of it.

“We really care about the quality of it. So if we come back, it would be for the right reasons.”

The Sun previously reported that the cast and writer Jed Mercurio have cleared space in their calendars for 2026 to commit to making the show, but no announcement has yet been forthcoming.
