Marvel’s Kevin Feige Teases ‘X-Men’ Reboot To Be Directed By Jake Schreier: “The Script’s Underway”

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is teasing the X-Men reboot set to be directed by Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier.

In a roundtable promoting The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Feige provided an update on the development of the superhero film, which is expected to release after the Multiverse Saga concludes with the release of Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.

“It’s official, Jake Schreier is doing X-Men for us, and we’re very, very lucky,” Feige said, according to ComicBook. “And we’re very, very lucky to have him and very excited to have him. And so we’re beginning. It’s all starting now. The script’s underway.”

Feige called Schreier “an incredibly smart guy” and “talented filmmaker,” adding, “We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts. And if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions, he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic. He’s younger than me for sure, but he’s tapped into that in a way that I think was important for Thunderbolts, much more important for X-Men. Because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.”

MyRumors exclusively reported in May that Schreier was the top choice to take on the X-Men reboot following the success of Thunderbolts.

The studio boss acknowledged that the X-Men characters have had many movies on-screen and “a lot has been done,” but said “there’s so much more to tap into.”

“There [are] so many sagas within sagas for X-Men that that’s part of what we’re talking about now — which saga to grow and build to while doing the most important thing, which is introducing all of these characters and giving them their due in our first film,” he added.

When Disney and 20th Century Fox merged in 2019, the X-Men characters became available to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of the actors that were in the Fox films will reprise their roles for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film, set to be released on December 18, 2026.

The actors who have previously played X-Men characters include Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Channing Tatum (Gambit).
