EXCLUSIVE: Penguin Random House Imprint Storehouse Voices has snapped up director/writer/producer David E. Talbert’s memoir for six figures, we hear.
Entitled, Everything I Know About Being A Man (I Learned From A Woman), the memoir from the Almost Christmas and Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey filmmaker was inspired by Talbert’s current days as a father imparting advice to his son. Talbert was raised by a single mother with little to no interaction with his father.
Forty years later, in having father and son conversations, Talbert realized the lessons he’s learned in the journey to become a man, came from a woman.
Along with the publishing of the book, Talbert is currently developing a half-hour comedy for
television based on the same title. The story of a first-time dad tasked with the impossible:
becoming the father he never had. And in the process, not driving himself and everyone around
him crazy.
Talbert is repped by UTA.
In November 2023, Talbert is launched HBCU Next, a fellowship program that brings aspiring filmmakers from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the USC School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) Summer Program. He conceived and funded HBCU Next alongside his wife and producing partner Lyn Sisson-Talbert as an opportunity to enrich the educational experience for students of Color. Within the program, participants gain career insights and creative skills to develop authentic portrayals of Black experiences and culture within screenwriting, filmmaking, and the evolving media landscape.
